Creative Corner

Remember that empty space that I talked about filling a little while ago? Well, it's filled. Done. Check. We were DIY rock stars this weekend and got started early on the spring cleaning/projects. We knocked out so many items that have been sitting on our To-Do list for months now. Including taking this once bare dormer space from this:

To this:

Pretty, right? Not that much of a transformation, I know, but we didn't want to change a space that wasn't really ours (paint, etc). So this is perfect for our needs: doing homework, reading, and scrapbooking. It even transitions nicely into a sewing table:

We are still in search of a cool chair. Preferably something old(ish). And cheap. We found one this afternoon that we loved but still haven't made up our minds. And I know exactly what kind of lamp/lighting I want but can't seem to find it anywhere. Well, anywhere in my price range. I refuse to pay over $300 for a lamp (yes, I'm talking to you, Anthropologie). Here is what I'm after:

But we're in no real rush for any of that so we will take our time hunting it all down.

Stay tuned this week -- we've got a few more fun projects to share with you.

Love it.

I love Ruche. Cute clothes. Reasonable prices. And even though my clothing allowance is spent (already!) for the month of January, these are the things I am loving right now:

Oh and I bought this lamp for my office today (half off @ Crate & Barrel!)

A mini office makeover

Got crafty last night (after a day of shopping with Kat and dinner with the fam). I finally got around to doing some things to transform the barren wasteland that is my office into something that is warm and personal. My first (and super easy) step was to put up something functional and pretty on the back of the hutch sitting on my desk that would brighten up the dark cherry wood and allow me to utilize that space. I looked around but couldn't find anything that met that criteria and made me happy at the same time. So I made my own.

I just picked up four cork tiles and some pretty fabric. Since the tiles were pretty thin (and I envisioned something a little more substantial) I just glued two tiles together, measured and cut the fabric, stretched it tight around the tiles, and glued it into place (and burned my thumb in the process).

I had a few Command strips lying around in a drawer that I used to hang the tiles. And I now have a monthly calendar courtesy of Katherine that looks cute and helps me stay on top of things (I decided to ditch the stand it originally sat on to free up desk space, but don't worry, I have plans to repurpose it at a later date).

This is so easy to do, literally took 10 minutes, and cost way less than any other option I considered. And it can be used anywhere -- kitchens, mudrooms, offices, laundry roofs, craft rooms, etc. -- that needs a little organization and a pop of color.

I have a lot of fabric leftover. And the more I stare at it, the more in love with it I am. I'm thinking I will incorporate it into quilt sewn on the new sewing machine I got for my birthday!

P.S. I think I'm getting sick. Again. What a way to start a new year. I have been taking Airborne and Zicam every 3 hours. And I think we're going shopping for a new humidifier this week. If my plan works, I might have found a way to successfully combat the common cold.

P.P.S. Today is my nephew's 9th birthday! Happy Birthday Tyler! I hope you get all the Mega Block Halo men you can carry.

Antiques

I love antiques. Even as a kid, I've almost always preferred beautiful wooden antiques. There's just something about them, I dunno, the craftsmenship, the smell, the story of where they've been and what they've seen.

This is a great article from apartmenttherapy.com about the value of antiques. Check it out and then go hunting for some this weekend.

Type "antique" into dictionary.com and some pretty unflattering synonyms pop up: aged, elderly, obsolete and out-of-date. I beg to differ! Maybe it's because I grew up in a home filled with antiques from around the world. Maybe I am just getting old (aged, elderly, obsolete and out-of-date…). But I can't imagine decorating a room without a single piece of antique furniture. Why?

1. Antiques tell a story. Antiques are relics of the past: they carry the weight of bygone conversations, obsolete customs and etiquette. They are a reminder of the extravagances — and the hardships — of another era. And antiques that are inherited from your ancestors provide a tangible link to your own heritage.
2. Antiques are green! Antiquing is the ultimate in eco-friendly shopping. Antiques are inherently recycled and reused. And by buying an old piece, likely constructed before our dependence on oil, you are extending an already impressive life cycle! Very few products can claim such longevity.
3. Antique furniture is generally very well made — and made by hand. If it has lasted this long it will likely withstand the daily grind of modern life. Of course, antiques can break and they do carry their own set of rules for maintenance and cleaning. But a table that has lasted through 200 year's worth of meals is probably pretty well made. Moreover, scuffs and imperfections are often celebrated in antique furniture not dreaded.

4. Antiques are trendproof. While antique pieces are less likely to be super trendy they are also less likely to ever be completely untrendy. If you buy a piece with beautiful lines, curves and construction it is unlikely to offend even the trendiest of trendoids.
5. Constrast is good. Antiques can add texture, energy and personality to even the most modern or contemporary decor. In fact, it is the contemporary room that benefits most from a few antiques. The old pieces cast a new light on the newer pieces — and vice versa. If your living room is chock full of mid century modern, adding an ornate Rococo console table or Gustavian barrel back chair turns a monochromatic (albeit stylish) setting into something truly original and fun.
6. Antiques retain or increase in value. Well-cared for antiques go up in value over time. While prices rise and fall (many experts say that now is the best time to invest in antiques, by the way), antiques are a good investment over the long haul. In some ways a new piece of furniture is like a new car: the new models plummet in value the minute you drive them off the lot.

Manic Monday

So we got these cute metallic plates a few weeks ago but I just got plate hangers for them this weekend and finally hung them this evening. They are hanging by the dining table as we speak and they are pretty cute.

Didn't work out today, I watched Dancing with the Stars instead. Now, I never watch that show but I have to this season because Sean Johnson is on it and so is Melissa Rycroft from the Bachelor. She went from getting dumped on national television last Monday to competing on Dancing with the Stars this Monday. I'm pretty sure that girl is having the best week ever. Not to mention she did really well for only having 48 hours of practice under her belt. Nice.

There might be a little surprise for your viewing pleasure here in the next few days. I'll keep you posted.

P.S. I hate Mondays.

Fun but Freezing

We have been in decoration mode for the past few days. We got a new runner for our entry way, some new shelves, and finally hung a lot of the pictures that had been hanging out around the baseboards for months. I feel so productive. I am still playing around with the placement of things and all the little details, but I am much happier with how things are looking.

Tyler came and spent the afternoon with us playing Call of Duty and snacking. He brought Tillie some treats that he got especially for her. How sweet is that?

I also got to spend some time with my friends tonight to celebrate Gary's birthday. We had American Pie Pizza and then went back to their house for cake. It was fun. Happy Birthday, Gary.

Gilmore Wednesday

Had dinner with the rents at McAllister's then spent the remainder of the evening watching Gilmore Girls and eating Dove chocolates with mom. The decorating bug has bitten again so we also brainstormed about things we could do to the apartment. Look for pictures coming soon.
